  What is Ptosis?



Ptosis is a condition which upper eyelid is abnormally in low position. It is also known as droopy eyelid or blepharoptosis. It can affect people of all ages.

  What are the probable causes for development of Ptosis?



Baby can be born with hereditary droopy eyelids (congenital ptosis) or it may develop as we age and our muscles deteriorate. In some cases ptosis is caused by trauma or damage to the muscles that raise the eyelids or the nerves that control these muscles. Sometimes, ptosis can be due to eye surgery or certain drugs. Other causes are - eye tumors, neurological disorders, or systemic diseases like diabetes.

A variety of factors may increase the risk for developing ptosis or passing it on to your children. They are as follows :

  Treatment of Ptosis



It is important to treat ptosis as early as possible to avoid visual disturbance especially in children as their vision is in developing stage otherwise they may develop amblyopia or astigmatism. Specific treatment is usually directed towards underlying cause. Mild ptosis - If symptoms of ptosis are mild, treatment may not be necessary. In some mild cases, eye excercises may strengthen weak muscles and correct the problem.
  • Special glasses for ptosis - Special glasses may be used. These glasses have a crutch attached to hold up the eyelid.
  • Special contact lenses may be used for ptosis. These lenses help in correcting the drooping of eyelid.
  • Moderate to severe Ptosis - In moderate to severe cases surgery may be the only option to correct the eyelid.
